Elekta is a human care company with a mission to improve, prolong and save lives by providing radiotherapy-based clinical solutions for treating cancer and brain disorders. Its products consist of integrated treatment planning, information and workflow management systems, clinical solutions for radiation therapy including linear accelerators, integrated X-ray systems and clinical solutions for patient positioning and fixation, integrated solutions for stereotactic radiosurgery and minimally invasive neurosurgery, and brachytherapy solutions. Brachytherapy solutions are designed and manufactured in the Netherlands.
The lecture will provide an introduction into radiotherapy and the specifics of the different technologies underpinning Elekta products, then cover in detail the field of brachytherapy as one of the most cost-effective ways of treating cancers like prostate and cervical cancer. Elekta Brachytherapy, the former Nucletron, is the leading provider of brachytherapy in the world. Special attention will be given to the technical challenges which need to be solved in order to extend the reach of brachytherapy to different types of cancers, different categories of medical professionals and different areas in the world.
The speaker Maarten Buijs did his PhD Chemistry & Physics at the Utrecht University and did his Postdoc at Harvard University. He started his career at Philips Research, becoming Senior Director and then moved to the FEI Company as Director R&D Europe, Product Group Single/Dual Beam and Product Marketing Research. He became Vice-President Development & Engineering EUV at ASML and is currently Vice-President Research & Development Brachytherapy at Elekta.
