Next Generation Storm surge barriers
Omschrijving
In 2015 the Delft Infrastructures & Mobility Initiative (DIMI) is organising a series of debates on ‘Deltas & Ports of the future’. The focus is on the task of giving practical shape to the recent Delta Decisions instituted by the Dutch government. Attention is also being paid to sustainable port development in delta areas as well as a number of international activities that DIMI researchers are involved in within this theme. The series concludes with an autumn conference.
You are warmly welcomed to attend the debate entitled 'Next generation storm surge barriers' which will take place on 10 April. DIMI is organising this event in cooperation with the Delft Flood Risk Center and KIVI (Royal Dutch Society of Engineers).
During this colloquium recent developments in the design and planning of barriers will be discussed. Critical issues, such as reliability and management, and innovations (e.g. the use of larger inflatable barriers) will be highlighted. A reflection by lola architects (authors of the new book ‘dikes in the netherlands’) will follow on the landscape aspects of barriers. The second presentation will focus on the planning and design of flood risk reduction alternatives (including storm surge barriers) for the Houston Galveston region. This large metropolitan area is at significant risk from surge flooding due to hurricanes. The Houston Galveston case is also an integral design case for TU Delft students from Architecture, Civil Engineering and TPM and their ongoing projects will be displayed.
The seminar is open for students, researchers and professionals that have an interest in flood risk reduction and planning for urbanized delta regions.
