Omschrijving

Seminar chairman: Dr. Johan Paulides, TU/e, Electrical Engineering, EPE.

In the coming years one can expect that electric vehicle transport will play an increasing role as one of the answers on the growing environmental problems especially in urban environments. Due to the high efficiency of electric motors, the so called well-to-wheel efficiency is significantly better as compared with combustion engines. Moreover the electric car emission is even zero during driving. And in case the required electricity is produced by sustainable energy sources, electrical transport may mean important promises for a cleaner and sustainable environment. Nevertheless a number of problems has still to be solved, before electric transport will be an accepted success: electric motor configuration leading to improved traction, smaller and more powerful batteries, fast charging of batteries and many more others subjects.
The Electrical Engineering Department of the TU Eindhoven is strongly involved in research on electric vehicles. In the group “Electro-mechanics and Power Electronics” (EPE), headed by Prof. Dr. Elena Lomonova, a large number of these subjects are studied, leading to impressive innovations. (www.ele.tue.nl/nl/epe/)
This interesting evening seminar will focus on some of these subjects: the first subject is devoted to developments in the field of the electric car powertrain systems, followed by the development of a light weight, low active-power wheel suspension system, important especially in combination with in-wheel electric motor systems. The third subject is about the development of fast charging of batteries. Battery charging can be seen as one of the bottlenecks in a change over to electric car transport.
One can distinguish a much broader field of subjects related to car mobility, a field which is called Smart Mobility. The Electrical Engineering department is strongly involved in the field of smart mobility and the seminar presentations are research subjects in this Smart Mobility group.
Professor Elena Lomonova will introduce this fascinating smart mobility theme in the first seminar presentation.
