Biofuels technological challenges and opportunities
In this presentation we will give an an overview of the technological challenges that need to be overcome to make biofuels a sustainable and truly renewable source of transportation fuels. Heterogeneous catalysis will play a major role in solving the issues but in contrast to oil refining the issues with biomass are much broader. A completely new supply chain needs to be developed and sustainability criteria are key to making these developments a success.
Albemarle has been involved in the development of new catalytic technologies for biofuels for about 10 years and invested substantially in this activity in the last couple of years both in R&D as well as in its manufacturing capabilities. The first results of this effort are now reaching the market and renewable fuels are a reality.
Spreker(s)
Frans Plantenga:
Frans Plantenga is currently Technical Director of Albemarle’s Alternative Fuels Group a sub division of Albemarle Catalysts.
Albemarle Catalysts is one of the leading manufacturers of refining and chemical catalysts. Main products today in the refining catalyst business are FCC (fluid catalytic cracking) and HPC (hydroprocessing) catalysts and polymerization catalysts for the chemical industry. The AFT group was formed in January 2007 and focuses on the development of catalysts and specialty materials for the production of alternative fuels. The development of biofuels processes and catalysts is the key activity of this group today.
Frans has over the years had several positions in the refinery catalyst business group:
Global Development Director HPC, Marketing Manager Business Development group, General Manager FCC Eumea-AP, Manager Technical Services HPC- FCC and Research Scientist HPC
