Building new fossil fuel power plants
Omschrijving
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGES OF BUILDING NEW FOSSIL FUEL POWER PLANTS IN EUROPE
NUON are planning to apply for a very large investment in coal based-powergeneration in the north of the Netherlands. NUON initially planned to use coalgasification as the main process which would allow future CO2 removal. However, with the high increase in manufacturing prices worldwide and the uncertainties of future fuel prices and the environmental concerns about CO2, NUON and in fact most powercompanies, are facing a major dilemma. This is a european problem.
Due to the continuously increasing demand for electricity and the outdated production facilities, a clear gap is developing in production capacity in Europe. New capacity is required but will the fuel be? Will fossil fuels, gas or coal, remain the main stay of power supply? The cost for CO2 avoidance is unclear; the EU CO2 trading scheme proposal is threatening especially all the new build coal initiatives.
