Gas-to-Liquids
Omschrijving
The technology behind the Pearl GTL Project - now and in the future
by Guy de Kort, vice president XTL, Shell.
Shell recently shipped the first Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) cargo from its 260,000 b/d Pearl facility in Qatar. Pearl GTL has been ten years from concept to delivery, and is one of the industry’s largest integrated gas projects. During construction 52,000 workers from 60 nations build this unique plant.
Shell has been active since 1974 in developing, commercializing and operating its proprietary GTL technology. This continuous effort has led to more than 3500 patents, a wealth of know-how including extensive experience in operating commercial scale plants with feedback loops to R&D and project development.
GTL technology converts natural gas into a range of synthetic liquid oil products, such as naphtha, kerosene, diesel and base oils.
The key elements of the technology comprise:
- production of synthesis gas (syngas) using the non-catalytic Shell Gasification Process (SGP)
- converting the syngas into long chain normal paraffins by the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis
- hydroprocessing and/or hydroisomerization of the FT product to generate final products with the desired properties
Guy de Kort will explain the gas-to-liquids technology, the technology development over the years and the achievements in the Pearl GTL project in Qatar that is ramping up its capacity as we speak.
The presentation will be in English.
Spreker(s)
Guy de Kort is Shell’s Vice President XTL, based in Amsterdam where he leads the XTL technology group. In this role, Guy is looking after XTL (GTL) technology development, new project designs and technology support for existing and new XTL projects, including the GTL facility in Bintulu Malaysia and the Pearl GTL Project in Qatar. Guy is a mechanical engineer from Delft University.
In the first 10 years of his career with Shell he has held various technical roles in upstream process and facilities engineering, followed by some 10 years in commercial roles, which included the development of the Pearl GTL project. In 2009 he returned to technology in his current role.
