Imad Mohsen, the CEO of Tulip Oil Netherlands, took the audience through the short but impressive company history. Tulip oil was founded in 2009 and has since started production at the Hemrik gas treatment facility in the Netherlands, for which a low cost approach to the development was prerequisite to making it economic. Mr. Mohsen explained how a different company culture is required to enable such cost performance, as well as highlighting various technical choices that enabled Tulip to develop Hemrik where others could not.

Omschrijving

Hemrik gas treatment facility, a low cost solution to unlock marginal fields
by Imad Mohsen (CEO Tulip Oil Nederland)

Tulip Oil Holding was founded in December 2010 by Roelof Platenkamp, ex NAM CEO, and other colleagues, with the intention of developing oil and gas fields in proven areas in Holland and Germany. It is a small company of approximately 30 people split evenly between The Hague and Heidelberg. Tulip aims to unlock reserves using state of the art technology (e.g. largest onshore 3D in the history of Germany) and low cost developments.

In a short period of time, it managed to secure acreage, build an operational team and make a number of discoveries in Holland (3 successful wells out of 3 onshore and offshore) and in Germany (Bedernau, Lauben and Schwarzbach). Less than five years since inception, Tulip managed to achieve commercial production operated by its Dutch subsidiary Tulip Oil Nederland (Feb 15 for Donkerbroek/Hemrik first gas) and German Subsidiary Rhein Petroleum (Nov 15 Schwarzbach first oil).

Donkerbroek 3 was drilled in 1991 and was deemed uneconomic. Tulip Oil drilled DKK-4 well in a small nearby undrained compartment and Hemrik 1 well in Akkrum field previously produced by NAM. The plan was to combine three marginal accumulations into an economic development.

The challenge remained to build a treatment facility and connect the wells together and export the gas (24 km of pipeline required) at a low cost while safeguarding integrity and safety for the first production project for Tulip Oil. At the height of the oil prices in 2014, Tulip in cooperation with Frames, HAK and other Dutch contractors designed and built the facility and pipelines, with first gas in 2015, a year later. The objective was to halve the costs of what Tulip understood to be a state of the art facility nearby.

This presentation aims to share this journey with you, including the highlights and lessons learned, as low cost development seems to be a must have in today’s world.
