Prelude FLNG – a world’s first
In 2006, the Australian Government awarded Shell an exploration permit in the remote Browse Basin off the northwest coast of Western Australia. In January 2007 Shell discovered gas in the area, with a second discovery made in 2009. These gas fields are around 475km north-east of Broome in Western Australia and over 200km from the nearest point on the Australian mainland. Given the size of the resource and its remote location, the gas fields are well suited to development using Shell’s floating FLNG solution.
In May 2011, Shell announced the world’s first Final Investment Decision – a commitment to put money on the line – for the development of these gas fields, which is now known as the Prelude FLNG project. Once completed, the FLNG will be the biggest man-made floating structure ever built, measuring a stunning 488 x 74 meters.
In the almost 2 years since, this mega project has moved ahead full steam and currently construction are activities are ongoing across the world. Leading the delivery of this project on behalf of Shell is Project Director Jaap de Vries. He will give a presentation on the history and background of Prelude FLNG, the organization of the project and key delivery locations, as well as the progress made since FID.
