Stopping the Jullietta D
MARIN estimated that the annual probability of a collision between a ship and a wind turbine will be 1.5-2.5/year in 2030. As both the amount of wind turbines and the amount of ship movements are increasing, this probability will even increase when no further measure are being taken. On January 31st 2022, an accident happened where a bulk carrier (Julietta D) got adrift on the Dutch North Sea and collided with a turbine foundation. This demonstrated that the risk of collisions is not only a theoretical probability, but a realistic scenario.
MARIN therefore posed the following research question:
Can collisions between drifting ships and offshore windturbines be prevented with a barrier between the shipping route (or mooring area) and wind turbine parks?
