Nuon and Delft technical university are investigating the use of a facility in the Eemshaven for storing energy in ammonia.
The idea is to store the excess energy from solar and wind facilities in a liquid chemical that can be converted back to electrical energy when needed. Ammonia is a suitable candidate for this purpose as it can be converted back to energy with no emissions of carbondioxide and little NOx.
Nuon and TU Delft intend to build a demonstration plant at relevant scale within 5 years.
The project is part of the ‘Power to Ammonia’ project of ISPT in which different parties like
companies, universities and other institutes take part.
The site of the NH3Fuel association gives more information about the possibilities of ammonia as fuel.
