Head-on collisions of streams of protons may result in the formation of a Higgs boson, but head-on collisions of streams of liqReactoruids can be very interesting too, as this results in very rapid and very intimate mixing. The idea may be simple, but what happens on a micro scale is very complex
Understanding what goes on in the mixing zone and even more so developing reliable design and scale up rules requires both sophisticated measuring techniques and extensive modelling and simulation.
At the 15th European Conference on Mixing, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, June 28-July 3 Cláudio António Pereira da Fonte was awarded the Young Researcher Award in Mixing 2015 for his PhD thesis “Mixing Studies with Impinging Jets. PIV/PLIF Experiments and CFD Simulation”.
[Cláudio António Pereira da Fonte] His work focused on mixing in Confined Impinging Jets (CIJs) an alternative to conventional mixing in stirred tanks. His thesis, which provides a better understanding of this mixing method for laminar flow, also identified mixing mechanisms and flow regimes in CIJs.

ESSEE2015 is organized once every three years under the auspices of the European Federation of Chemical Engineers (www.efce.org). In the Summer School, PhD students and other young researchers come together to learn about advanced topics in Electrochemical Engineering. As such, the school helps PhD students and young researchers in their current and future research in electrochemical engineering & science.

The diverse program consisted not only of lectures by renowned scientists from Europe, Asia and the USA, but also offered students to present their research during a poster session (and award). Moreover, participants chose between an experimental or theoretical workshop track during which the information taught during lectures was consolidated.
After the event, the working group is looking back to a succcesful summerschool that was visited by more than 100 students.
