THE FUKUSHIMA ACCIDENT AND THE FUTURE OF NUCLEAR ENERGY IN EUROPE

On March 11, 2011 the earthquake and tsunami near mainland Japan caused a major nuclear accident in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants. The destruction was large and iodine prophylaxis and large scale evacuation were needed to protect the public and workers. The accident made European and other regulators require nuclear plant operators to conduct safety margin tests (‘stress tests’) to assess the performance of their installations under severe conditions.

Now almost two years after the accident not only insider information has become available about the accident and the mitigation measures taken, also the impact of the accident on our global energy supply has become visible. Some countries abandoned nuclear energy, while others just postponed new build plans to (re)assure their safety case. More than ever, the choice for nuclear energy is evident but controversial at the same time.

At this symposium four distinguished speakers from abroad will present the latest results of the studies into the cause and consequences of the accident, and the role nuclear energy can (continue to) play in Europe.
