Thursday 18 February our host SBM gave a lecture on “A Novel Wave Energy Converter”. This excellent lecture gave us a peek in the renewable energy market and offered a really innovative device which by-passes traditional large steel fabrication cost. Thus the Wave Energy Converter aims to be in the viable range for cost of electricity. The audience, with around 100 members and SBM employees, were treated to a perfectly presented lecture and were inspired on the topic, judging from the many questions. A successful evening for KIVI OT and SBM.

Omschrijving

Lecture "Novel Wave Energy Converter: Promising Future".

Ocean waves comprise high energy levels, which have inspired many people to invent mechanical devices to harvest wave energy. However, the harsh offshore environment is a major challenge for strength and reliability of mechanical systems.
SBM Offshore has dedicated a significant research effort to develop a Wave Energy Converter (WEC) that does not require mechanical components to generate electric power, but is based on Electro-active Polymer (EAP) material.
Development of the material and the power take-off from the device resultedin a concept that offers a promising solution for a WEC that is easy to moor, does not require maintenance and is not prone to fatigue damage: absolutely the characteristics required to build a business case for wave energy with a competitive LCOE.
