Software Defined Radio event at Fontys University of Applied Sciences

Software-defined radio is a rapidly developing field that is driving the development of and innovation in communications technology, and promises to significantly impact all communications sectors. Entities developing these SDR systems require a trained workforce that has been prepared with the mindset, knowledge, skills, and tools required to address both the system (breadth) and technical (depth) aspects of SDR systems. Developing SDRs necessarily involves a collection of disciplines including, but not limited to, electromagnetics, radio-frequency engineering, communications, digital signal processing, embedded systems, computer programming, and systems engineering.

Since hands-on experience is important for the students to internalize their knowledge the NERG (=KIVI) sponsored in 2007 a FLEX6500 HAM Software Defined Radio for Electrical & Electronic Engineering students at Fontys in Eindhoven. The FLEX6500 was given to the Eindhoven Student Radio Amateur Club (ESRAC) and is still used in the Curriculum (Radio communication practical’s) as well during the lunch time in the Amateur Radio Station Pi5FTS. The Amateur Radio Station Pi5FTS (www.pi5fts.nl) operates from room number R1-0.180 of the Electrical Engineering Building and is located on the Rachelsmolen 1 in Eindhoven. The station is currently active on the HF bands on SSB, CW, RTTY, and PSK31, 2m FM, with satellite capabilities on 2m and 70cm. More information can be found on http://pi5fts.nl/info/

Speakers

1. Prof. Sonia-Heemstra
Technical University of Eindhoven (TU/e)

SDR in 5G mobile phones

Sonia Heemstra is a Full Professor and Chair of Heterogeneous Network Architectures (HNA) at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and director of the Centre for Wireless Technology Eindhoven (CWTe). Her field of research is wireless systems in the broad sense. Sonia is interested in all aspects of wireless communications and specifically the challenges of future generation wireless networks. This ranges from reliable and ultra-low latency communication for autonomous vehicles, using 5G and beyond networks, to distributed protocols in large heterogeneous and self-organizing networks for the Internet of Things. The combination of wireless and optical communications is also one of Sonia’s interests. Part of her research focuses on protocols and techniques that take advantage of combining the high capacity of optical networks with the flexibility of wireless communications. An example is dynamically reconfigurable radio access networks that adapt to instantaneous and to long-term traffic changes, are scalable, energy efficient, and have low installation, maintenance and operational costs.

2. Dr. Anne van Otterlo

KIVI Telecom Introducation

Anne is board member of KIVI Telecom / is Account CTO at Nokia with specialties Telecom Network Evolution, Fixed and Mobile Voice and Data Services, Telecom Strategy, Business Case Analysis, Value Based Argumentation, Cable Sector

3. Dr. ir. Peter Smulders (Maxwell stichting)

HAM radio research

Peter Smulders is Associate Professor with the Electromagnetics group at the department of Electrical Engineering. In addition to his lecturing duties, he has been doing research on high data rate wireless technology for 30 years. As such he addressed broadband WiFi and 3G, 4G and 5G radio technology including spectrum and regulation issues. He contributed to many national and international projects in close cooperation with, amongst others, NXP, TNO, IMST, Catena, Bell Labs, Thales, KPN, Samsung and Philips. He also contributed to a large number of demo- and pilot systems. One example is an own-developed pilot system that demonstrated, for the first time, wireless HDMI operation in the newly defined 60 GHz band.

4. ir. Duncan van Meeteren (Fontys lecturer)

SDR in the curriculum and PI5FTS at Fontys University Eindhoven.

ir. Duncan van Meeteren (PA7DVM) is lecturer at the Fontys University of Applied Sciences and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Callsign of this station is PI5FTS Membership:
Fontys and TU/e students can join the Eindhoven Student Radio Amateur Club (ESRAC) for free.

5. Dr. ir. Evert-Jan Pol (NXP)

SDR in car radios

6. Agentschap Telecom with their special cars

Hopefully the visitors can have a look in the Car from Agentschap Telecom. Also it will be possible to get a tour the radio shack and the antennas on the roof.
