#6 in CEO cycle: Wiebe Draijer (SER)
Thursday April the 25th, 50 students and some members of KIVI NIRIA's management department came to faculty TBM for the CEO lecture by ir. Wiebe Draijer. At this moment Wiebe Draijer is the chairman of the Dutch Social Economic Council (SER). The SER is an important partner in decisions made by the gouvernment and other large influencial groups in Holland.
The career path that Wiebe followed was not typical for an Engineer. When advised against studying journalism, he started his study Mechanical Engineering. However within a few months he became the Technology correspondent for a large newspaper. After finishing his studies he started at McKinsey and over the years made it to partner. He stayed at McKinsey until six months ago when he became chairman of the SER. He says that nothing in his career was planned but that he was lucky that so many people believed in him and gave him these big opportunities. Wiebe has plans to modernise the SER. He wants a higher throughput, so more issues can be discussed and he wants to involve more people that are affected by the advices given by the SER. Although Wiebe has a good career path behind him, he recons that nobody should be employed with a job they don't like, only to make it to a next career step. The driving force behind Wiebe, as the days moderator Martin de Jong describes, is his 'emotional intelligence' that gives him the ablilty to work with almost every person in every situation.
