R&D Engineer Ate te Voortwis from Allseas' Naval Department delivered a lecture delivered by our department at TU Delft's Faculty of 3mE which covered the training simulator for the Pioneering Spirit.

Allseas designed the Pioneering Spirit, a sailing factory, to lift, transport, install and repair (parts of) drilling rigs. Given the complexity of the various systems, sensors and operations, a high degree of technical understanding and stress resistance is required of the crew. To ensure that the personnel on board have sufficient experience to properly perform the tasks they have to carry out, Allseas chose to build a complete simulator environment. Here, complete operations can be trained, from entering around a rig, to lifting the platform and sailing away. This lecture gave a brief overview of the ship's development and construction. It then elaborated on how a simulator environment is used to leave nothing to chance.

Description

In the development process of Allseas' newest vessel, Pioneering Spirit, one of the many challenges is the training of the crew.
On the first project, these operators will lift the Talisman YME jack-up platform from its place in a lift, and transport it to a shipyard in Norway.
Given the complexity of the various systems, sensors and operations, a high degree of technical understanding and stress resistance is required of the crew.
To be sure that the people on board have sufficient experience with the tasks they have to perform, Allseas has chosen to build a complete simulator environment.
Here, complete operations can be trained, from entering around a drilling platform, to lifting the platform and sailing away.
This lecture will give a brief overview of the development and construction of the ship, and go into more detail on how a simulator environment is used to leave nothing to chance
