Report on the visit to the construction of the N276 / Dr Nolenslaan Noord viaduct in Sittard

19 interested participants had signed up for this interesting excursion.

Project manager Richard Bouman was initially very expertly replaced in explaining the work by project manager Martijn Peijnenburg, both from the company Dura Vermeer. Mr Peijnenburg gave a fascinating explanation of the process of commissioning, tendering, preliminary design and final design.

The project concerns a provincial infrastructure project consisting of building the new viaduct over the provincial road N 276 and the necessary adjustments in the road infrastructure of the former T junction Dr Nolenslaan Noord and N276. Very clearly explained on the basis of drawings, how a concrete structure must be made when working below the level of local groundwater. This is extra complicated here in Sittard because no well drainage was allowed in the working pit for the viaduct. Work is done with a special layer of underwater concrete before the actual construction for the road section under the viaduct and the viaduct itself can be built.

This was followed by a visit with our hosts Martijn Peijnenburg and Richard Bouman to the ongoing work on the viaduct, the road section under the N276 viaduct and the required connection of Dr Nolenslaan Noord to the N276, both northbound and southbound. Of course, special attention was also paid to bicycle traffic, such as to and from the nearby Trevianum school building, the companies at the Sittard Noord industrial park and the Hoogveld residential area and Sittard city centre. All kinds of interesting issues were expertly explained, such as the course of the road section, the pouring of the walls of the viaduct and the cycle paths, the water cellar and the connections for traffic control installations, street lighting and crash barriers, and the quality of the asphalt / ZOAB to be used.

The project was started in August 2015 with the felling of trees and preparation of the required site, a soil survey and an archaeological survey. It is therefore very good to see, that by mid-October 2016 the work has already progressed to the point where it is expected that in the second half of November the N276 can be put back into use, as a road passes under the new viaduct. February 2017 it is hoped to have all other necessary roads , cycle paths and works, including a special road for agricultural traffic, in use.

Finally, we thanked both our hosts for their hospitality and expert guidance of our interesting KIVI excursion.

Description

Dura Vermeer is currently working on the realisation of a flyover junction in the N276 ( Hasseltse Baan ) near the Dr Nolenslaan in Sittard.

Our host project manager Richard Bouman will take us through the development, planning and implementation of a far-reaching project on a busy traffic road.
We will also focus on how communication will take place with residents in the area.

Project info:
The N276 is the regionally connecting road between Brunssum and Sittard. The Province of Limburg has found that the capacity of the old N276 intersection with Dr Nolenslaan is under pressure and may be insufficient in the future. Traffic jams occur daily, making the accessibility of Sittard Noord and the region inadequate.
In order to increase traffic flow and safety at the intersection, the Province of Limburg has decided to modify the design of the intersection from a single-level junction to a flyover junction.

Dura Vermeer started in August 2015 to carry out the field surveys, relocate cables and pipes and construct the temporary traffic situation where traffic will be diverted around the work area. Meanwhile, the bridge deck has been poured and parts of the connecting roads have already received their first layer of asphalt. Completion is scheduled for early 2017.
