Visit to snail farm and autumn walk.

Saturday, 1 October 2016, we visited the snail farm "Escargotière Saint Heribert" of Mr Jacques de Bock. It is located in Remersdaal, in the Belgian Voer region. Jacques, a chemical engineer, started the nursery here in 2010, which he runs with his wife Els.

We started the afternoon with the autumn walk in the area. Jacques showed us how nature has been shaped over the last 70 million years. We also saw how badgers take the steep walls of the hollow roads to their liking.

The stopover on a sunny terrace with delicious refreshments gave us the opportunity to strengthen contacts among ourselves, which is certainly also a goal of the autumn walk.

After the walk, we watched the film about the nursery, which showed us how the snails are cared for and processed from hibernation to harvest. Later at the nursery itself, Jacques showed us how snails live, reproduce, how they can be used for natural skin improvement and how he cares for and feeds them to make them ready for sale during the summer period. The snail season ends in mid-October, when it gets too cold and the adults need to be prepared for overwintering in order to provide new breeding in spring.

We ended the afternoon with a tasting of snails over a glass of delicious wine.

Description

At the KIVI region Limburg South, the autumn walk combined with a visit to a special activity has by now become customary.
The special activity, which we have now contacted is the Snail Farm of Mr Jacques de Bock.
Mr de Bock is a former chemical technology engineer and jovial host, who will introduce us to the world of snails. Through his numerous activities, you will be taken through the culture of snails, its possibilities and distribution.

Depending on the group size, he will also be able to guide us during the autumn walk. Attention will focus on the geological structure of the landscape around Remersdaal/Voeren (B) and what we find in it in terms of fossils or used products. You will be given a description for the walk or to take home.
At the end we can enjoy a snail snack and a nice glass of wine
