Algae
Description
Microalgae, sustainable source of raw materials.
Microalgae are promising for the future as a source of 'green' fuel and sustainable production of chemicals. Algae are interesting for industry because they can grow via photosynthesis using sunlight as an energy source. During their growth, they make proteins, fatty acids, carotenoids or enzymes, among others, that can serve as food, chemicals and fuel. They do this much more efficiently than agricultural crops, can be grown on seawater and on land not suitable for agriculture, and are therefore promising for the bio-based economy. During the lecture, microalgae and the bio-based economy will be introduced. In addition, applications of algae and research at AlgaePARC (www.algaeparc.com) will be discussed and a glimpse into the future will be given.
