FASTNED - superfast car charging
Founded in 2012, FASTNED's mission is 'To build the world's first network of fast-charging stations where all electric cars can charge'. Truly a long-term investment given the typical chicken and egg problem: the number of 100% electric cars is not expected to really increase until there is a nationwide network of fast-charging stations. The first phase of the so-called 'FASTNED Freedom Plan' is to set up and operate a network in the Netherlands. This was made possible because FASTNED was successful during a public tender resulting in obtaining 15-year concessions for 201 of the 245 existing refuelling/refuelling locations along Dutch motorways. Based on standardised design and execution, 50 of these have now been delivered and are in operation with an uptime of 99.99%. The experience gained from planning and building the Dutch stations is now being used for the second phase of the FASTNED plan: expansion of the network throughout Europe, initially in Germany and Belgium.
Besides the actual charging station project, the presentation and, in particular, the many questions asked were about the 'Autowende' in general, or in other words the transformation from cars with combustion to electric engines initiated by a number of social developments. In particular, increasingly stringent CO2 emission requirements - including related (tampering) scandals - and recent impressive technical developments in the battery field ensure that electric cars will be attractive, affordable and with good range in the near future.
All in all, a very animated company visit, with an excellent presentation on a topical subject.
Only downside to this meeting was that 45 participants had registered, of whom 10 did not show up without cancellation.....
