Buffet lecture 'A single ticket to Mars'
The Mars-One buffet lecture was held on 17 February.
Description
The Mars One project captures everyone's imagination: in 2025, if all goes well, the first astronauts will travel to Mars. They will be on their way for over a year and know one thing for sure: they will never see Earth again. This buffet lecture examines what is involved in a manned trip to Mars. Why are people so keen to go to this red planet? How useful is such a mission?
Govert Schilling is a science journalist with a great passion for astronomy. He is critical of manned trips to Mars, but would still go along if asked. His published works include: Handbook of Astronomy, Big Bang for your inside pocket and Mars. The Red Riddle. See also: www.allesoversterrenkunde.nl
Wim Dijkshoorn¸ an anthropology student at Radboud University in Nijmegen, is all set. He is among the last 700 people who can be entered for the mission to Mars. He is interested in how a small community can develop and flourish. Why does he see potential in a one-way trip to Mars?
ATLAS University College students are doing a theatrical simulation of colonising Mars. Directed by Gijs van Bilsen, Inspiration Officer at Pentascope.
This programme is open to all, but students are given priority. Registration is mandatory. You can do so until 10 February by sending an e-mail to: kivi@utwente.nl The costs are €5, including buffet. This amount must be paid in cash on the evening itself.
