On Tuesday, 7 May, the very first edition of the Engineering Student of the Year Election took place! In this event, organised entirely by KNS-Twente, we went in search of the Engineering Student of the Year 2013. To select candidates for this, the approach was to delegate one candidate for each study via the study associations. UT has 14 engineering studies, and of these, 12 studies found a candidate. Unfortunately, Chemical Engineering and Technical Mathematics were unable to find a delegation. In addition, at the last minute, Cas Ebbers (BIT), Stephen Geerlings (TI) and Diederik van Lith (WB) unfortunately had to cancel due to circumstances. The brave candidates who did dare to participate in the Election are: Cees Trouwborst (AT), Jan-Yme de Boer (BMT), Peter Bijl (CiT), Stefan Witkamp (CreaTe), Erik de Wit (EE), Tijmen van Diepen (IO), Giel van Erp (TBK), Luuk Voskuilen (TG) and Gerben Daling (TN)!

The show started 14:00 with Diederik Jekel as chairman of the day, known from De Wereld Draait Door (and Learns By). The jury was formed by Martin van Pernis (president KIVI NIRIA), Ed Brinksma (rector magnificus UT), Jan-Willem Peters (director Industrie & Engineering Continu) and Kees Eijkel (director Kennispark). After the candidates were introduced to the audience one by one, they started round 1, in which they were tested for intelligence. The first task was to solve a wooden puzzle. This went well for most: 6 of the 9 candidates had solved the puzzle within one minute! This was followed by questions in the categories: Geometric understanding, Language understanding, Logical reasoning and Memory. Of the 9 candidates, 5 advanced to the next round. The 5 winners of round 1 were: Gerben Daling, Stefan Witkamp, Luuk Voskuilen, Jan-Yme de Boer and Peter Bijl.

In round 2, they looked at entrepreneurship and, using a pre-made video/presentation, had to present who they are and why they are the best engineering student. After all candidates had their turn, the audience could vote for their favourite while enjoying a musical interlude by acoustic band AudioSauce. The public vote was averaged with the result of the jury, revealing the two finalists: Jan-Yme de Boer and Stefan Witkamp.

After a short demonstration by ESBV Buitenwesten, the finalists came down the stairs in good spirits to enter the last battle: the discussion. The proposition of this discussion was: should doping in (cycling) sport be legalised? It was an interesting discussion in which many good pros and cons were discussed. After votes from the audience and the jury's verdict, it was the honour of Ank Bijleveld, commissioner of the king of Overijssel, to announce the winner of Techniek Student van het Jaar 2013: Jan-Yme de Boer. Besides this beautiful title, he also won a cash prize of €750, a VIP meeting with the CEO of Siemens Energy and a tour of his choice at Siemens. Congratulations Jan-Yme! After the denouement, there was a drinks reception, which was well attended by audience, candidates and judges alike.

All in all, the day went smoothly and at the drinks, we could finally breathe easy! This would not have been possible without a number of people and parties we would like to thank. First of all, Diederik Jekel, the presenter, who made sure the audience had a very enjoyable afternoon. In addition, we would like to thank all judges for their presence and objective assessment of the candidates (which the audience sometimes missed). We would also like to thank the student associations, who made an effort to find a candidate for the Election. Finally, to the candidates and the audience who were present: thank you! Without you, it would have been a dull affair.

We thought it was a successful event, and a good foundation has been laid for next years!
