KIVI Innovation Drinks: Plastics of the Future

25 September organiseren we ons eerste evenement van dit academisch jaar,
in samenwerking met de jongste vereniging van de UT: sUsTain.

The 25th of september, we organise our first event in the new academic year,
together with the youngest association of the UT: sUsTain.

Op woensdag 25 september staat er weer een KIVI Innovation Drink op het programma, dit keer in de nieuwe Technohal van de UT. Een mooie gelegenheid om een kijkje te nemen in dit schitterend gerenoveerde gebouw (vh Langezijds).

De eerste presentatie wordt gegeven door Daniël Poolen, projectcoördinator Duurzaamheid bij het KIVI. Binnen de wereld van duurzaamheid heeft plastic (vervuiling) een speciaal plekje in zijn hart. Jarenlang werkte hij voor milieuorganisaties als het WNF en de Plastic Soup Foundation, als journalist bij televisieprogramma’s en als ondernemer aan ons plasticprobleem. Binnen KIVI betrekt hij leden met hart voor samenleving en milieu bij KIVI Future Society projecten. Het doel daarvan is om zo met de collectieve kennis van leden maatschappelijke problemen op te lossen. Plastic speelt daarbij een belangrijke rol.

De tweede presentatie zal verzorgd worden door Erik de Groot, co-founder van Iron Roots.
Iron Roots heeft als missie om een plasticvrije kledingindustrie te creëren en gebruikt hennep, eucalyptus en biologisch katoen voor hun sportkleding. De drie oprichters van Iron Roots vonden het naar dat bijna alle sportkleding van plastic is vervaardigd, en dachten: Dat kan en moet beter! De polyester shirts zijn namelijk niet alleen gemaakt van niet-hernieuwbare bronnen, maar zorgen ook voor enorme vervuiling door microvezels, die vrijkomen tijdens het wassen. Na lang zoeken en testen kwamen zij uit bij hennep, wat naast een duurzaam alternatief voor polyester ook een aantal fijne eigenschappen heeft. Zo kan hennep niet statisch worden en is het van nature antibacterieel, waardoor er minder nare geurtjes vrijkomen tijdens het sporten.

Tussendoor vindt er nog een korte workshop plaats waar iedereen aan mee kan doen.

Uiteraard wordt er na de presentaties gezorgd voor een drankje en is er ruimschoots gelegenheid om na te praten met de sprekers en de overige deelnemers.

Wednesday the 25th of september, we are organising another KIVI Innovation Drink, in the brand new Technohal of the UT. A wonderful opportunity to take a look at this beautifully renovated building, which was previously called 'Langezijds'.

The first presentation will be given by Daniel Poolen, chief sustainability at KIVI, the Royal Netherlands Society for Engineers. 
Within the world of sustainability, plastic has a special place in his heart. For years, he worked for environmental organisations such as the WWF and the Plastic Soup Foundation.
He also worked as a journalist for television programs, and as an entrepreneur to solve our plastic problem.
Within KIVI, he connects members with a heart for our society and the envirnoment, through the KIVI Future Society projects.
The goal of these projects is to solve societal problems by bringing together the collective knowledge of our members. Plastic has a major role in the current projects.

The second presentater will be Erik de Groot, co-founder of Iron Roots.
Iron Roots' mission is to create a plastic-free fashion industry, by using hemp, eucalyptus and organic cotton as materials for their athlectic apparel.
Their three founders were not really pleased by the current state of sports clothing: almost everything is plastic.
They thought they could, and should, do better, since polyester shirts are not only created by non-renewable materials,
they also cause pollution of our environment by releasing microplastics everytime they are washed.

In between there is a short workshop in which everyone can participate.

As a KIVI Innovation Drink is not complete without a drink, we will make sure there are drinks and bites after the presentations. There will be plenty of time to meet and talk to our speakers and other attendees.
