Title: Next-generation Wi-Fi for ever more demanding applications

Abstract:

An emerging requirement in communications is guaranteed and predictable network performance. In reply, the latest Wi-Fi generations bring more efficient and more reliable wireless connectivity. This talk will discuss key features to support low latency and improve reliability, features that are present in Wi-Fi 6 or are planned to be incorporated in Wi-Fi 7 and 8. When such features become available but also controllable and customizable, Wi-Fi can become an interesting candidate to extend time-sensitive networking (TSN) from the wired to the wireless domain. This will be illustrated through imec’s customizable Wi-Fi design.

Bio:

Jeroen Hoebeke received the Masters degree in Engineering Computer Science and PhD in Engineering Computer Science in 2002 and 2007 respectively. Currently, he is an associate professor in the Internet Technology and Data Science Lab of Ghent University and imec. He is conducting and coordinating research on deterministic and time-sensitive wireless communication, wireless network management, tighter application-network integration, (industrial) IoT connectivity and embedded communication stacks.  This expertise has been applied in a variety of application domains such as logistics, Industry 4.0, building automation, healthcare and animal monitoring. He is author or co-author of more than 200 publications in international journals or conference proceedings.

Eildert van Dijken (Strict)

Abstract

Wi-Fi – noodzakelijk voor IT, maar ook goed genoeg voor zorg en industrieel gebruik?

For more than 20 years I have been able to carry out various projects around WiFi. Wi-Fi is of course here to stay in our offices, even though a CIO at a major national security organization suggested that he no longer wanted to use it in the office for laptops and smartphones. WiFi is also widely used in healthcare and even for healthcare alarms.

Eildert graduated in 1995 as a Business Engineer from Eindhoven University of Technology. After his studies, he worked for 11 years at Ericsson in Rijen, in project management, as a technical trainer in mobile technology and as a consultant. Eildert has been working at Strict since 2010, where he now works as a Principal Consultant in the mission-critical communications team. He is involved in strategic issues, mobile technology developments and architectural choices. Together with a few colleagues, he makes the Strict 5G Podcast, writes for Telecom Business Magazine and still regularly gives training courses.

Speaker's bio

I.G.M.M. Niemegeers got a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Gent, Belgium in 1970, an M.Sc. in 1972 and a PhD degree in 1978 in Computer Engineering from Purdue University, USA. From 1978 to 1981 he was a system designer at Bell Telephone Mfg. Cy, Antwerp, Belgium. From 1981 to 2002 he was professor at the University of Twente, The Netherlands. From 1995 to 2002 he was a scientific Director of the Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT) of the University of Twente. From 2002 until 2012 he was chairman of the Telecommunications Department and professor in Wireless and Mobile Communications at Delft University of Technology.

Since August 2012 he is an emeritus professor at Delft University of Technology and guest professor at the Centre for Wireless Technology at Eindhoven University of Technology. He was involved in many European research projects and reviewer for many projects. His present research interests are 6G., Time-sensitive Networking and Wireless Avionics Networks.
