Biomass conversion technologies

The use of biomass as feedstock for the (petro-) chemical industry is envisioned through the thermal-conversion route via producer gas and through the bio-refining concept. In the thermal-conversion route, the whole chain is considered from biomass pretreatment via torrefaction, gasification using “ECN” Milena technology, tar removal using Olga technology, and syngas utilization for e.g. BTX- and methane production. Several unit operations are licensed and pilot units are being built worldwide. For the bio-refining concept, the emphasis is on the production of chemicals and fuels. Straw-like materials, for example, are separated into lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose fractions of high purity. Each fraction can then be converted into either bulk chemicals or specialty chemicals.
In the second part of the presentation, alternative separation concepts will be discussed. New combined reaction and separation strategies for thermodynamic limited reactions will be illustrated by ECN propriety membrane and sorbent routes. Identified fields of applications are decarbonisation of the power and steel industry and H2 production for e.g. refinery applications. Other relevant focal points are e.g. decarbonisation and/or desulphurization of NG, fuel gas and Claus tail gas, and gas drying processes.
