Fin propulsion revival

MARIN successfully tested the ABB Dynafin™ — a fully electric fin propulsion system. For this MARIN developed a dedicated open-water test setup, integrated advanced measurement systems, and collaborated closely with ABB engineers to optimise the fin motions for maximum efficiency and manoeuvrability. By combining CFD simulations, motion optimisation, and full-scale extrapolation techniques, MARIN predicted an open-water efficiency exceeding 80%.

This revival is not just about efficiency — it’s about rethinking propulsion through precision engineering and collaborative innovation.
