What does it take to design an offshore wind farm? Why can the seabed under one wind farm make it more expensive or more complex than the next one? In this lecture, “A Crash Course: Designing an Offshore Wind Farm”, Bayram Mercan (AFRY) shows how site conditions and foundation design choices shape the development of a fixed-bottom offshore wind farm, from the first site assessment to final project viability.

Starting with the ground and the foundations, the works through the key decisions that shape a project—from understanding site conditions and selecting turbines to optimizing layouts, choosing foundations, and designing electrical infrastructure. The lecture connects these engineering choices to energy production, costs, and project viability, highlighting the trade-offs between technical performance and commercial realities. Drawing on lessons learned from actual projects, it will also explore practical challenges, common pitfalls, and how early design decisions can influence a wind farm throughout its lifetime.
