Omschrijving

In July 2008, Sakhalin Energy Investment Company (SEIC) had successfully retrofitted its unique SALM system offshore Sakhalin Island in the Russian Sea of Okhotsk following its Universal Joint (Unijoint) connection failure in November 2007. This SALM system is part of the "Vitiaz" Production Complex in which the produced oil is exported from the Piltun-Astokhskoye-A platform via a subsea pipeline and the SALM to the Okha floating storage and offloading (FSO) unit for subsequent loading onto tankers for delivery to customers. Yearly oil production using the SALM system is limited to a six month ice-free period. Full year round operations were planned using a pipeline replacement for the SALM system late 2008. However, in the interim period, there was a significant production opportunity if the SALM was reinstalled in time for the summer 2008 ice-free season. In order to make the 2008 production season possible, an unique and fast track project to reinstate the SALM was necessary. Shell undertook this challenging project starting in January 2008, incorporating proven engineering standards with an immense amount of engineering ingenuity as the start of the production season (ice free) was planned in July 2008. While the original fabrication of the SALM Unijoint repair took 2 years, the challenge was how to achieve success for design, fabrication and installation in just 7 months time.

This project received the 2008 Shell "Award of Excellence" for execution.
