Tour de Stations
On Wednesday 8 April, KIVI NIRIA Construction & Hydraulic Engineering Department, in collaboration with Young Royal Haskoning, organised an excursion in the Randstad along two stations that are currently being rebuilt: Leiden CS and Rotterdam CS. During this Tour des Stations, all phases of the building process were covered: vision, architecture, design and implementation. Presentations were interspersed with tours of the work. The C9002 Jaap, an electric train from 1924, transported the very mixed group of around 60 engineers to and from the stations. Boosty's very well catered catering in the train completed the afternoon. The cube train, with its volunteer drivers, provided a good dose of nostalgia and made this excursion a unique experience.
The Hague CS; 12.30pm
The tour des stations made its start at The Hague Central Station around noon. At this meeting place, which is also undergoing renovation, the Tour participants were received by the organisers. A day earlier it had been announced that the NS had changed the departure location of our means of transport, resulting in an adjustment in the programme. Accompanied by an NS event manager, the group therefore travelled by regular train to The Hague HS. There, on track 1, the Jaap C9002, an authentic train from 1924, was waiting. Two volunteer drivers were waiting to accompany us on the day. However, due to recent changes in safety standards, "the cube box" was no longer allowed to run independently, so it was necessary to put a modern intercity locomotive in front of it. With this unique combination, young and old were united. Symbolic of this excursion, given the mixed company from young to old.
The change of departure location and the much shorter first train ride this entailed also made for a hectic start to the Tour for the caterer Boosty. However, lunch was successfully served in the very short time frame! This varied meal of various sandwich cakes, salads and smoothies, was very well received by all. The very friendly service was also appreciated. (www.boosty.nl).
The train rides on the authentic train were scheduled in between normal schedules. As a result, the excursion was tied to a punctual and tight schedule. The guest speakers and tour guides had to complete their presentations within the allotted time including any questions and there was absolutely no possibility of running out. Despite the occasionally rushed nature of the excursion, the tight schedule did ensure the necessary momentum.
Leiden CS; 13:22
After arriving at Leiden Central Station, participants walked in the pouring rain to the Naturalis museum, where they were welcomed with a cup of coffee or tea in the meeting room. Guest speaker Irma Luitse (NS Poort), project director of Pilot Station Leiden, gave a presentation on NS and ProRail's new vision for station development. In this World Stations vision, stations become dynamic city portals with international allure; a comfortable, safe and inviting place where you want to be. Next, Peter Heideman of the engineering firm Movares discussed the application of the vision and the renovation plans of the pilot station Leiden. Then, at the station itself, the group could see the result so far under the explanation of the two guest speakers.
The train ride to the next destination was extremely relaxed. On the way, it was soon convivial. Everyone received a muffin and a drink of their choice from caterer Boosty. The weather even started to clear up and the first rays of sunlight shed their light on the carriage.
Rotterdam CS; 16:23
Once we arrived at Rotterdam CS, a group photo was taken to capture this memorable day. The Tour party was welcomed at the visitors' centre of Rotterdam CS by the project managers of the Rotterdam CS project. Guest speaker Earde Jepma of NS Poort explained how Rotterdam Central fits into the World stations concept. The Infracentrum continued the story by taking listeners into the future via an artist impression film. The design of the Rotterdam CS terminal as well as RandstadRail were discussed in detail. As the final guest speaker, Vladimir Thumann of Gemeentewerken Rotterdam explained the implementation of the Rotterdam CS metro station. The excursion ended with a guided tour of the construction site after a brief word of thanks and thanks from the organisers.
The final highlight of the day was the train ride back. On the train, the mood was good. While enjoying a drink and snack served by Boosty, the participants were able to chat about the day. Conclusion of many: it was a fun nostalgic afternoon and enjoyed!
Description
We will travel between stations in an authentic little train departing from The Hague CS. Gather in the Station Hall.
We will then visit the World Stations Leiden and Rotterdam where we will receive a presentation by NS Poort on the World Stations vision and the philosophy behind this concept at both locations. Also, the renovation plans of both station areas will be discussed in presentations by the architect of the engineering firm Movares, Prorail, the contractor Haverkort Voormolen and the Infracentrum Rotterdam.
The presentations will take place in the Naturalis museum in Leiden and in the visitors' centre of Rotterdam CS and will be interspersed with tours of the construction site.
We trust that this excursion will provide an informative programme for the profession and in particular young budding engineers and, of course, other interested parties.
