KIVI Experts
KIVI Experts bridge the gap between cutting-edge research at universities and universities of applied sciences and engineering practice.

KIVI knowledge hubs: experts in key areas
KIVI collaborates with research groups at leading knowledge institutions, guided by experts in the fields of Big Data and AI, Architecture in Health, Smart Maintenance, and Sustainability. These KIVI Experts serve as key knowledge hubs within the KIVI network.
As authorities in their fields, they contribute essential expertise for engineers. In addition, they make their networks available to address questions from KIVI members. In this way, the knowledge and experience of their broader networks become accessible to KIVI.
How do KIVI Experts work?
A KIVI Expert acts as a central connector within their field. While the Expert serves as the main point of contact, the actual execution of activities or the answering of questions is often carried out by colleagues and partners within their network.
For example, a PhD candidate within the Expert’s research group may be equally well—or even better—positioned to respond to a specific question from KIVI. In this way, KIVI Experts function as essential links within thematic networks, offering research groups and engineers the opportunity to showcase their expertise.
The KIVI Experts

KIVI Expert Big Data and AI
Prof. dr. ir. Geert-Jan Houben and his research group are linking scientific research at TU with engineers in professional practice in the field of big data and AI. "The interesting thing about big data is that, like the web, it is simultaneously fundamental and experimental," says Houben. "This creates the need for a new kind of research, where computer scientists and engineers work together in new ways."

KIVI Expert Architecture in Health
This multidisciplinary research group led by Prof dr. ir. Masi Mohammadi is working on innovations in the field of building for health and for a smarter living environment. "Building for an ageing society means building for people's quality of life. This gives a tremendous sense of satisfaction; the ageing population and changes in society give meaning to our (building) skills," Mohammadi said.

KIVI Expert Smart Maintenance
Prof. dr. ir. Tiedo Tinga and his research group develop new and innovative methods that help make maintenance smarter and more predictable. The aim is to establish a link between maintenance in practice in Dutch industry and scientific research on topics such as predictive maintenance, structural health monitoring and condition-based maintenance.

KIVI Expert Sustainability
Dr. ir. ing. Sander Mertens' lectureship focuses on linking knowledge on various energy systems, sustainability, environmental impacts, economics and autonomy. This is important to take the next step in the transition to renewable energy sources.
