The Deep Horizon oil spill incident
Description
The effect of the Deep Horizon oil spill incident on the Drilling Industry.
By Gerard de Blok,
Field visit coordinator and lecturer in Drilling Engineering at the Delft University of Technology, Department of Geotechnology.
The outcry after the gigantic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was meant to have an immediate, but also a long-lasting effect in all sectors of the Oil & Gas Industry. Drilling Practices and Oil Spill Control were revisited and measures put in place to minimize the risk it would ever happen again. But can we be assured that the occurrence of oil spill events has been reduced to a level we would all accept as low as practically possible? Have the lessons learnt resulted in a tighter and effective control by operators and regulators?
