On 19 March 2013, KIVI NIRIA Students Twente organised the buffet lecture "Let The Game Begin!" in collaboration with the honours society Ockham and the Studium Generale.

The activity was introduced by two gamers who were playing a game at the front of the room. Peter Timmerman, from the Studium Generale, was the chairman of the day and kicked off with a small talk with the gamers. After this short intro, the buffet was opened and enjoyed by Anton Nijholt, the first speaker. Anton is in the Human Media Interaction department at UT, where they are currently researching physiological games. Here, controls are performed using the player's brain activity. Therein lies an interesting future for the game industry.

After a short break, Maria Haagsma did her lecture "Fun or disastrous?". Maria talked about her research on game addiction. Gaming is becoming more and more accessible and its popularity has increased. A small group of the population experiences problems due to too much gaming. These include social, work or school problems. Currently, no diagnosis can be made for 'gaming addiction' because there are no criteria for it. Maria closed with the fact that by no means everyone who plays a lot of computer games is also addicted.

After the speakers' lectures, Peter opened the discussion while enjoying an ice cream. Some theses had been prepared for the guests to respond to. In addition, many people had questions of their own for Anton and Maria. The fact that the speakers explored a completely different aspect of gaming made the discussion interesting.

Unfortunately, there was too little food for the many people present, so a second round of serving was out of the question for most. We will pay extra attention to this at our next activity.

All in all, it was a very successful activity and for that we would also like to thank H.V. Ockham and Studium Generale very much!

Description

Gaming is a popular pastime. Thanks to the latest technological developments, it is also becoming increasingly fun and exciting. In the 1980s, we pushed Pac-Men across the screen, today we manoeuvre through lifelike 3D spaces. But developments continue. At UT, work is under way on a brain-computer interface; this will allow you to use brain waves to directly control a computer. In the future, there will no longer be a joystick or mouse. However, all this gaming can also get out of hand and become an addiction. When exactly are you a gaming addict? How common is it and what are the consequences?

Prof Anton Nijholt is professor of computer science at UT, specialising in Human Media Interaction. He researches brain-computer interfaces.

Dr Maria Haagsma is a psychologist. She recently obtained her PhD with the thesis Understanding problematic game behaviour at UT; she researched which factors contribute to problematic game behaviour.

This programme is open to all; however, registration is mandatory due to the food.
This dinner lecture is a co-production of KIVI NIRIA Students Twente, Studium Generale and Honours Association Ockham.
