When it comes to facing the energy challenge of meeting increasing demand while reducing emissions, improving the recovery in current oil fields is an essential part of the solution. And when it comes to getting more oil out of our existing fields - EOR is one of the most powerful answers. EOR is about increasing the volume of oil recovered from a reservoir through application of thermal, chemical or miscible gas processes. Currently on average only about 30 - 35 per cent of the oil in fields is brought to the surface.

Thermal methods are mainly applicable to heavy and viscous oil, where reservoir characteristics and cost of steam generation are key issues. Miscible gas injection by hydrocarbon injection is slowly phased out as more gas export options exists today. Ideally CO2 injection would be applied widely. In view of it lower cost and lower energy requirements, chemical flooding is a prime candidate for application in many of Shell’s waterfloods. A lot of single well pilots are planned in the 2009-2010 time frame. However, there are still fundamental concerns about the in-situ process, the volume of required chemicals and the logistic costs.

An overview of current challenges in the various areas will be presented.

BIO WILLEM SCHULTE

After a PhD in Nuclear Physics in 1978, Willem Schulte joined Shell in 1979 as Reservoir Engineer in research at KSEPL, Rijswijk.

He has been involved in basic R&D into many different methods of enhanced oil and gas recovery. He has been Head of Reservoir Engineering of the Brent Field, UK, contributed in formulating the long-term development by Field.
