Ultrasound is well known for its application in noninvasive diagnostic imaging. Focused ultrasound wave scan be used to generate heat in the focus point, which can be used for non-invasive heating of tissues in patients. The heat can be used to directly treat and destruct tumor tissue without the need to perform surgery or radiotherapy. For precise control of heating, the focused ultrasound treatment is performed in an MRI scanner which provides anatomical pictures of the patient as well as temperature measurements as a feedback. Treatment of tumor boarder zone can be achieved using temperature sensitive chemotherapy which gets “activated” only at elevated temperatures. The advantage is a high local dose of chemotherapy in the tumor, while the rest of the body is exposed less to the chemotherapy than in conventional treatments. In this presentation, the current research of potential new cancer therapies using focused sound waves will be explained showing recent results.
