Omschrijving

Gasification is a key technology in meeting the energy challenge and securing affordable energy in an environmental responsible way. The gasification process uses partial oxidation to convert a wide variety of hydrocarbon feedstocks, ranging from natural gas to coal, into clean synthesis gas (syngas, H2+CO). There is a wide range of gasification applications. In refineries gasification units convert very heavy residues into syngas, for chemical feedstock or for energy, or into hydrogen. Coal gasification is presently mainly used for producing chemicals and their derivatives such as ammonia, methanol, acetic acid and urea fertiliser. But the future of coal gasification is for power generation with pre combustion CO2 capture. Processes for the gasification of biomass have been and are still being developed. They promise to open an attractive route for the production of ultra clean transport fuels.

The Shell Gasification Process, SGP, is widely applied, more than 100 units, in refineries (e.g. Shell Refinery Pernis) and chemical plants. Shell is using the gasification process in the Malaysia Gas to Liquids (GTL) plant where natural gas is converted to syngas to produce ultra clean oil products. Also in the Qatar Pearl Project gasifiers are used. The Shell Coal Gasification Process (SCGP), first demonstrated in the Buggenum power plant, is now used in 12 plants in China and 7 plants are under design or construction. The Chinese plants are for the production of chemicals. Another application is the gasification of tar sand residue for the production of energy and hydrogen for tar sand upgrading projects in Canada.

Speaker will introduce the gasification technology and will review the experience with the various applications of the Shell gasification processes. Also the operation of the Chinese plants will be presented.

Presentation will be in English.
