Omschrijving

The Port of Rotterdam has been an oil hub and refinery center for decades, as well as a coal hub for power plants. The Port has recently developed into a more diversified Energy Port for Northwest-Europe. Over the last 5 years, 10 world-scale facilities in LNG, power, hydrogen and biofuels came on stream in the Port: a total of 6 billion euros of private investments. In addition, new energy infrastructure for gas, electricity, steam, waste heat and CO2 has been installed, making the Port an ever more cost-efficient, carbon-efficient and energy-secure location for its customers in the port area and the hinterland.

However, the energy landscape is changing rapidly. Renewable energy is getting momentum, while at the same time heavy investments in unconventional fossil energy sources may lengthen the fossil age for a while. Europe will have to adapt to a changing competitive picture in the global industrial and energy landscape. What may be the impact on the Port of Rotterdam? How will the world-scale industrial cluster in the Port be able to adapt? At the moment, the Port Authority is working out 3 energy scenarios for the Port, describing 3 potential futures with their new business opportunities.

In this lecture, Ruud Melieste of the Port Authority will share the insights obtained in the scenarios study.
