A Cinderella story?: "Restructuring in the European refining sector”

The presentation will cover an analysis of the European refining industry and their challenges and opportunities, the changes in ownership of European refineries, and the effect thereof on security of supply for Europe.

The following questions will be addressed:

1. What is going on in the European refinery business?
2. Why a lot of refineries are being sold, but also are being bought?
3. What type of European refinery owners buy and sell, and why?
4. What is the potential impact on the European security of supply of crude and oil products?

Jochem Meijknecht joined the Clingendael International Energy Programme (CIEP) in August 2009. He holds a Master degree in International Relations, writing his Master thesis on Polish and Hungarian gas policy towards Russia. Prior to joining CIEP he was an intern at ABN AMRO Bank N.V., GasTerra B.V. and at N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie. During these internships he respectively worked on research projects concerning Central Asian energy export outlets, Gazprom's presence in the EU-27 and energy policy towards Russia.

In the role of researcher at CIEP Jochem is currently involved in analyzing downstream oil issues and in particular the restructuring of the European refining industry. He is also a project manager of the CIEP-part of a European energy research project called POLINARES, which focuses on global energy and mineral governance. Aside from his activities at CIEP, Jochem is currently finalizing a Masters in Finance at the Duisenberg School of Finance in Amsterdam.
