Omschrijving

“Gas is again front page news. Russia and Ukraine are for the second time in a bitter dispute about gas supply and gas transit. Bulgaria, Rumania, Greece, Slowakia and other member states of the EU have been cut off from, often, the only supply source they have. Almost all countries in the EU depend to some extent on gas supply from Russia. Despite agreements and promises of the reliability of the supply of gas, Russia has again failed to supply. Is it a commercial issue or has gas been used as a political tool. Can we expect this to be a recurring event?

Security of supply from all sources of energy to the European Union is of the greatest importance. Europe is highly dependent on imported energy and with the diminishing supply from own resources, will become more dependent in the future. Security of supply is and will remain part of the EU political agenda.

How much gas does Europe really need in the future? There are different views about the need for gas in the European energy supply scene. Where will the gas come from and can LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) help?”

These and other issues of the international gas market will be discussed by Dick de Jong, senior fellow from the Netherlands Institute for International relations, Clingendael in The Hague. His presentation will be in English.
