Container loss explained
In the night between January 1 and 2, 2019, the 380 m MSC Zoe lost 345 containers above the Dutch coast, some containing hazardous substances. In the wake of the accident MARIN and Deltares were asked to investigate why large container vessels could lose containers when they are sailing in the southern North Sea. The presentation will give a brief summary of the accident, before going more into detail on the environmental conditions as encountered by the North Sea and how ultra large container vessels react to them, to finally conclude on the mechanisms that can lead potentially to container loss.
Speaker: Bastien Abeil, Senior Project Manager Transport and Shipping at MARIN.
