Thorium in Molten Salt Reactors
Omschrijving
Since a few years the Molten Salt Reactor attracts a lot of attention due to its excellent properties on safety and sustainability. It is the only reactor capable of breeding with thorium efficiently, while the reactor could also be used to burn long−lived nuclear waste from current reactors. Because molten salt is used as a coolant and as a fuel carrier, radioactive fission products can be removed continuously and thorium can be added during operation. With thorium in the MSR almost endless amounts of energy can safely be generated for tens of thousands of years.
On Friday April 17, the sections “Kerntechniek” and “Technische Fysica” of KIVI, the Netherlands Nuclear Society and the “Stichting Milieu, Wetenschap en Beleid” organize a one−day symposium on the perspectives of Thorium in the Molten Salt Reactor. The morning session is devoted to the technical and scientific aspects of the Molten Salt Reactor. Speakers from the Netherlands and the US will give an overview of the different concepts and will discuss the research and development needed for the MSR to become reality.
In the afternoon renowned speakers from abroad, like Leslie Dewan from Transatomic Power and Dave Martin from the International Weinberg foundation, will describe the global developments, especially the large−scale Chinese programme, and the impact of Thorium in the MSR for the global energy supply. In this part also the possible contributions of the Dutch research institutions and industry in the international scene will be highlighted.
