Abstracts and Speakers

First abstract : Low-profile Dielectric Dome Concepts for Enlarging the Scanning Range of SATCOM Terminal Array

The trend for SATCOM user terminals in the professional market goes towards flexible, low-profile solutions based on phased array antennas. To maintain connectivity also in long haul flights at extreme latitudes a large beam-steering capability is needed, which in array antennas comes at the cost of performance degradation due to a worse impedance matching and a reduction in directivity. Solutions based on dielectric domes were already proposed in the late ’70 to enhance the steering capabilities, but mostly resulted in bulky structures, not useful for practical applications. In this presentation an approach developed at TNO for the design of dome array antennas will be illustrated together with a recent example related to a realistic industrial use-case.

First speaker: Stefania Monni (TNO)

Stefania Monni is Senior Scientist at TNO Radar Technology department. Since 2014 she leads the Antenna Team, where she is responsible for the definition and technical coordination of the research activities and for the long-term strategy and since 2018 she is also with the Chip Integration Technology Centre, in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, as Senior Scientist of the RF Chip Packaging Program. In 2024 Stefania joined the EM group at TU/e as part-time professor. Her main research interests concern periodic structures, particularly active electronically scanning array antennas and Frequency Selective Surfaces, in combination with advanced manufacturing technologies.

Second abstract: Integrated Nanophotonics for Wireless Applications

Integrated photonics technology plays a crucial role in wireless communication and sensing. Complete optical wireless system can be built on the chip, enabling high-capacity optical wireless communication as well as free-space based optical sensing and ranging. Through on-chip optical-RF converters, millimeter and terahertz waves can be generated from the photonic chips, bridging the two frequency bands. In this talk, InP integrated nanophotonics developed at TU/e will be introduced, followed by an overview of recent demonstrations of photonic chips for optical and RF wireless.

Second speaker: Yuqing Jiao (TU/e)

Yuqing Jiao received two Ph.D. degrees from the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 2013. Currently he is an Associate Professor at TU/e. His research interests include integrated nanophotonics, and heterogeneous integration technologies. He is currently a senior member of IEEE and a Board Member for the IEEE Photonics Society Benelux Chapter.
