Bart Smolders

Bart Smolders received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in 1989 and 1994, respectively. From 1989 to 1991, he worked as an MMIC designer at FEL-TNO in The Hague. From 1994 to 1997, he was Radar System Designer at Thales, the Netherlands. From 1997 to 2000, he was project leader of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) at the Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astronomy (ASTRON). From 2000 to 2010, he worked at NXP (formerly Philips) Semiconductors, responsible for innovation in the RF business line. Since 2010, he has been a full-time professor at TU/e in the Electromagnetics Group with special interest in antenna systems and applications. He is currently leading several research projects on integrated antenna systems operating at frequencies up to 300 GHz for various application domains, including 6G wireless communication, radar sensors and radio astronomy. In particular, he is a co-founder of the FNS-6G National Growth Fund (NGF) project. He is also a co-founder of the start-up ANTENNEX. He is currently chair of the EuRAAP Working Group on Active Antenna Arrays and organiser of the 6G Forum at EuMW 2025 and 2026. He was chairman of the IEEE Benelux Section and of the NERG (Netherlands Radio and Electronics Society). Besides his research activities, he was dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and he is currently scientific director of the Casimir institute at TU/e.
