Omschrijving

Algemene ledenvergadering van de afdeling MRB, met aansluitend een lezing. Bij deze de samenvatting in het Engels. Een omschrijving in het Nederlands volgt. De lezing zal in het Nederlands gehouden worden.

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Eindhoven, the Netherlands, executes various projects in the field of medical robotics, which have been initiated over the last years. Focus of these projects is on an integrated mechatronic design approach, combining high-precision mechanical design principles and high-performance controller synthesis. TU/e’s expertise in these fields originates from the Control Systems Technology group (CST) of prof. dr. ir. M. Steinbuch. Strong elements in CST’s research are the application-driven research approach and close collaboration with the high-tech industry in the Brainport region, which was chosen 'the smartest region of the world' in 2011. Examples are Philips and ASML with machines that lead the world in accuracy and speed. Two examples of research projects in the field of medical robotic technologies by CST are a robotic system for laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery and a robotic system to assist in vitreoretinal surgery. Both projects resulted in new robotic systems, combining haptic feedback to the surgeon, high precision and human-like dexterity in a cost-effective, compact design. The talk will focus on the design, implementation and evaluation of haptic feedback in these systems.
