Omschrijving

Are profitability and sustainability just buzz words of modern society? Or are we to take them seriously? If so, optimal control will have a bright future. Optimal control exploits quantitative, scientific knowledge and understanding of processes. These are used to build a quantitative mathematical model. On the other hand optimal control forces designers to explicitly and quantitatively formulate control objectives, i.e. what they want. Based on these two, well established optimal control techniques and software are able to generate the best control policy. No questions need to be asked about any better control policies; they do not exist.
Why is optimal control not (yet) being widely used in practice? Is optimal control alone sufficient? These issues will be addressed by means of several simple examples, some directly related to industry. Finally educational perspectives concerning optimal control will be presented.
