Description

Gas was found in the Bergermeer in the 1960s. No more gas can be extracted from this field, between Alkmaar, Bergen and Heiloo.

TAQA Energy wants to give the gas field a second life in the coming years: storing gas. Underground gas storage helps to ensure that sufficient gas is always and everywhere available at a reasonable price. Moreover, natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel. Gas storage contributes to a more flexible energy supply and thus to the integration of renewable energy. Energy from renewable sources such as solar and wind is not always available; natural gas can then be used as an alternative to produce electricity.

Why will the field soon be used for gas storage? What does drilling for gas mean, and what aspects are involved in gas storage? Is there still a risk of earthquakes, what other risks are present. All these questions will be addressed during the lecture
