FabLab in Alkmaar: the Cheese Factory
Description
A fablab facilitates invention and innovation by bringing computerised tools within the reach of individuals. FabLab is a global community of FabLab, the name is a contraction of Fabrication Laboratory.
It is a public digital workshop where people are invited to make things themselves using various techniques and where open sharing of designs and ideas is encouraged. Or to put it another way, a FabLabs is a workshop that provides low-threshold access to a number of computer-controlled prototyping machines that allow users to turn their ideas into tangible products. They are often breeding grounds for innovations.
The Cheese Factory is an idea of André van Rijswijck, who thought it was a shame that the 3D printer at the Technasium Calland Lyceum in Amsterdam often went unused. He was keen to share the device with others and especially children.
On the site next to Hall 25 in Alkmaar-Overstad, a workplace has now been created in a number of stacked containers, where there are not only 3D printers to try out. Sticker cutters, laser cutters and vacuum formers also invite to fiddle.
