Recently, the first 6-month endurance trial of HIsarna, the sustainable alternative to the blast furnace process, started. This breakthrough technology can reduce the amount of energy and CO2 emissions of a steel company by at least 20%. Combined with CO2 capture and storage, its emissions can be reduced by at least 80%. After this endurance test, the next phase of designing, building and testing an industrial-scale HIsarna plant will begin. HIsarna was conceived at Tata Steel in IJmuiden and is being developed and tested on site. As operations manager, Johan van Boggelen is closely involved in these developments and will explain to us whether this is where the future (for IJmuiden) lies, and if so...what is still needed to achieve this.
