Description
The following topics will be reviewed.
1. DRINKWATER
Topics will include: sources, extraction, standards (both from the WHO = World Health Organisation and the Dutch) and purification. Michiel will also discuss the organisation of the drinking water world, drinking water quality in Europe/world and the special position of the Netherlands. Furthermore, the many health aspects of our drinking water are discussed: chlorine, lead pipes, shallow groundwater, micropollutants, pesticide/medicine/hormone residues, Legionella, bottled water, (Coffee) vending water/cooled water (coolers), and house, garden and kitchen filters.
2. WASTEWATER
Besides the aspects of sewers and overflows, the objectives, treatment requirements, principles and characteristics of a sewage treatment plant are covered. Furthermore, the organisation of the sewage treatment world, the special position of the Netherlands and the situation in the rest of the world.
3. SWIMMING WATER (surface water, sea)
The kick-off will be about EU standards and comments on them (too lenient). Michiel will give some pointers on how to self-assess bathing water quality in your holiday resort. Some general hazards (Wijl's disease, botulism, blue-green algae) and points of attention before bathing/swimming will also be discussed.
Of course, there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions

20:00-22:00 lecture and discussion.
