Project approach protection and bicycle parking IJboulevard
IJboulevard is an underground bicycle storage facility with a sustainable, high-quality appearance, with space for four thousand bicycles. A freestanding approach guard can guide ships that are out of helm. Together with the attractive rooftop promenade, it provides a total upgrade of the ground level. From initiative to realisation, risk management was a requirement, avoiding damage to surrounding objects, such as the underlying North/South Line and the cofferdam behind it.
In the event of an attack situation, damage to the bicycle shed had to be prevented and unforeseen matters in the subsoil had to be taken into account. This resulted in a sustainable design, with the low weight saving fifty per cent of the piles of the reference design.
It was a requirement that all materials, equipment and people needed for construction be transported by water to minimise inconvenience to the surrounding area. Pre-building the cycle shed in three (tunnel) elements in the western harbour area and bringing them in by water to the project site provided for this to the maximum extent. For the first time, concrete (tunnel) elements were immersed on foundation piles installed vibration-free in advance. A technical, innovative tour de force of civil engineering and Dutch hydraulic engineering.
