On 1 April 2015, KIVI's Maintenance Department visited the workshops of Fokker Component Services in Oude Meer.

With a Fokker in the pond and a hot cup of coffee, 14 participants were welcomed hospitably. After a brief introduction, they started with the introductory presentation provided by Vincent van Vliet, Obsolescence & Reliability Manager. Part of the presentation was the impressive company film 'Aircrafting'.

Fokker Component Services provides maintenance of specialised aircraft components, for example: altimeters, displays, navigation equipment, hydraulic pumps and pneumatic parts.

After the presentation, the floor was given to Frank Wehnes, product manager at Fokker Services for avionic components. He took us through Level 4 Maintenance. This innovation from Fokker Services represents a new level of component maintenance. In a world where the technical lifespan is much longer than the economic lifespan, Fokker Services often faces the challenge of replacing components that are no longer produced. In the case of electronic components, this means an extra challenge, as you cannot see what is defective with the naked eye. In addition, buying a new circuit board (a €20,000), for example, is a lot more expensive than replacing a resistor (€0.15).

To determine exactly what is causing the fault, an X-ray scanner is available to detect, for example, defects in the solder layer or IC. To test, e.g. the control board, an automated test bench is available that can perform approx. 4000 measurements per 10 minutes using pins and thus perform a full function test. See here for more information on Level 4 Maintenance.

After this fascinating presentation, the groups were divided into and Ralf Wintjes (product manager hydraulic components) and Frank Wehnes each took a group. The tour went past the hydraulic and pneumatic workshops where components were overhauled and tested, and then past the avionics department. The number of square metres of these workshops hid a high number of technological marvels.
The excursions ended over a cup of coffee after which the participants had the opportunity to catch up.
